Here it is, folks -- the moment you've been waiting for all summer (or maybe that's just us?): The Runcible Spoon's fifth issue! Read it in the viewer below. If you can't see it, try opening it in a different browser. Go on...click!
This issue is filled with offbeat summery food delights from unique perspectives. Hardy Boys ghostwriter Hugh Ryan shares his grandmother's recipe for chicken aspic. National Gallery of Art archivist Lauren Algee gives us a lesson on vanitas paintings -- and shows us how to eat it. And NPR jazz blogger Patrick Jaranwattananon reflects on Louis Armstrong's penchant for red beans and rice.
If you live in DC, you can pick up a free copy of the zine at neighborhood boutiques and cafes like Pulp, Treasury, Miss Pixie's, Tryst, Mr. Yogato, Hill's Kitchen, Soho Tea and Coffee, Big Bear Cafe, Peregrine and Chinatown Coffee. If not, you can order a copy on our Etsy shop!
Lastly, very special thanks to the Runcible Spoon staff, Claire O'Neill and Emily Wagner, for giving up so much time, energy, love and creativity to this project. And BIG thank you to our amazing contributors: Alison Baitz, Grace Ma, Patrick Jarenwattananon, Hugh Ryan, Lisa Markuson, Sarah Commerford, Anne Strother, Lauren Friedman, Roger Horowitz and Brian Sykora of Pleasant Pops, and Lauren Algee.
Please let us know what you think of it in the comments below. What would you like to see more of? What did you love? What did you hate? What's your favorite food? Tell us anything. -Malaka
